Terranea Resort is located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Rancho Palos Verdes, California — a coastal community overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It sits on ~102 oceanfront acres, with panoramic (~270-degree) views of the ocean, Catalina Island, coastal bluffs, gardens, and natural coastal habitat. The resort opened in June 2009, developed by Lowe Enterprises. Its site was formerly Marineland of the Pacific, a famous oceanarium/theme park, which closed in 1987. In planning and construction, there was a strong emphasis on preserving natural environment: ecological sustainability, green space preservation, retaining native flora, minimizing disturbance to existing habitat. The architecture and landscaping are Mediterranean-inspired, blending indoor and outdoor spaces, using materials and design cues that harmonize with the SoCal coastal environment.
