Rural futures

Rural areas facing numerous challenges, including increasing global competition, access to water, availability of skilled labor, climate change. Rural areas meet these challenges, capitalize on their strengths and make the most of their opportunities.
It proposes a number of actions designed to build on or enhance existing initiatives aimed at supporting the sustainable economic and social development rural areas. The actions are grouped into five key themes:

economic development
healthy and productive rural landscapes
water resources
community development
leadership and collaboration.

Background, more

Farming is not the only economic activity, it could also manufacturing, retail, health, education and financial sectors. The region’s rural areas also support a rich array of flora and fauna, provide vital ecological services and recreational opportunities, and are critical in maintaining its biodiversity. Rural Pyrenees Atlantiques also draw card for tourists, including locals looking to escape the hubbub of city life. These facts are testament to the significance of rural communities and industries and the important contribution they make to the region.
